Location
Porto do Açu — Rio de Janeiro (RJ); carried out and tested at the WF Service workshop
Year
2026
Duration
6 consecutive days

Objective

The objective of the intervention

The purpose of the job was the mechanical recovery of Hydraulic Ballast Pump No. 01, covering complete strip-down, inspection of the components, recovery of the shaft, replacement of sealing elements and bearings, replacement of damaged fasteners, anti-corrosion treatment, painting, reassembly, adjustment and a bench test simulating the operating conditions of the pump.

Scope carried out

  • Complete strip-down of Hydraulic Ballast Pump No. 01 and its components
  • Visual and dimensional inspection of the components
  • Assessment of the mechanical condition of the assembly
  • Recovery and straightening of the pump shaft
  • Replacement of the special seals
  • Replacement of the oil seals
  • Replacement of the bearings
  • Replacement of the spider-type locking elements
  • Replacement of damaged bolts
  • Anti-corrosion treatment of the surfaces
  • Painting and finishing of the equipment
  • Complete reassembly of the unit
  • All necessary mechanical adjustments
  • Bench test simulating the operating conditions
  • Verification of mechanical operation, shaft, bearings, seals, possible leaks, noise and vibration

Execution

The sequence applied to recover the equipment

The order below reproduces how the work was actually carried out, including the points where the condition found required a change of scope.

  1. Complete strip-down and inspection. The WF Service technical team began the work with the complete strip-down of Hydraulic Ballast Pump No. 01 and its components. Every item was then subjected to visual and dimensional inspection — shaft, bearings, seals, oil seals, fasteners, locking elements, contact surfaces and the remaining parts of the assembly — so that the mechanical condition could be assessed. Components showing wear or damage were identified during the inspection, and those not fit for reuse were replaced.
  2. Straightening and recovery of the shaft. The pump shaft was inspected and found to need recovery. Straightening and recovery were carried out, applying the procedures required to restore its dimensional and mechanical condition. Once the work was finished, the shaft was inspected again and prepared for reassembly.
  3. Supply and replacement of components. WF Service supplied and fitted 04 new special seals, model WJ 506.AHX.0500.BAR, made to measure; 02 oil seals 65 x 85 x 10 mm; 02 oil seals 50 x 65 x 10 mm; 02 bearings SKF 230.8E.CP/C3; 02 bearings SKF 233.09A/C3; spider-type locking elements; new bolts in place of the damaged ones; and the remaining items required for correct reassembly.
  4. Anti-corrosion treatment. Once the unit had been stripped down and the components recovered, the pump was given an anti-corrosion treatment, including preparation of the metal surfaces. The purpose of the procedure was to remove points of corrosion and to prepare the surfaces properly for the finish, giving the equipment greater protection and better conservation.
  5. Painting and finishing. After the anti-corrosion treatment, the ballast pump went through the painting and finishing process. The surfaces were properly prepared before the paint was applied, in order to provide protection against corrosive agents and better conservation conditions for the equipment. Once painted, the assembly was visually inspected to verify the condition of the finish.
  6. Reassembly and adjustment. With the recovery work completed and the components prepared, Hydraulic Ballast Pump No. 01 was fully reassembled. All the mechanical adjustments needed to ensure the correct positioning and operation of the components were carried out.
  7. Bench test. Hydraulic Ballast Pump No. 01 was bench tested at the WF Service workshop, simulating the operating conditions of the equipment so that its behaviour after the corrective maintenance could be assessed. Mechanical operation, the behaviour of the shaft, the operation of the bearings, the tightness of the sealing elements, the condition of the seals and oil seals, the presence of leaks, abnormal noise or vibration and the general operating condition were all verified. After the test the equipment was in proper working order and was approved.

Result

What the intervention delivered

The intervention delivered the complete mechanical recovery of Hydraulic Ballast Pump No. 01, with the shaft recovered, the compromised components replaced, anti-corrosion treatment, painting, reassembly and mechanical adjustment. On completion, the equipment was bench tested simulating the operating conditions, was found to be in proper working order and was approved in the test.
