Replacement of a firefighting main

Replacement of corroded sections of the firefighting main, with workshop prefabrication and hydrostatic testing.

Discipline
Piping
Sector
Marine
Location
Shipyard — Rio Grande (RS)
Year
2023
Duration
21 days

Objective

The problem that prompted the intervention

Inspection found advanced corrosion in sections of the firefighting main. The replacement had to take place within the docking already scheduled, without affecting the programme of the other work fronts.

Contracted scope

  • Site survey of the sections to be replaced
  • Workshop prefabrication of spools
  • Removal of the corroded sections
  • Installation of the new lines
  • Hydrostatic testing
  • Identification, support and painting

Execution

The sequence applied and the engineering decisions taken

The order below reproduces how the work was actually carried out, including the points where the condition found required a change of scope.

  1. Dimensional survey on site with routing and interferences detailed.
  2. Spools prefabricated in the workshop, with welding and testing carried out off the vessel.
  3. Controlled removal of the corroded sections, with adjacent areas protected.
  4. Installation of the new lines with the minimum of welding on board.
  5. Hydrostatic test with pressure and hold time recorded.
  6. Identification, permanent supports and painting to the applicable scheme.

Sections of the main with advanced corrosion found at inspection.
After
Main replaced, hydrostatically tested, identified and painted.

Result

What the intervention delivered

The main was handed over having passed its hydrostatic test within the docking schedule. Workshop prefabrication reduced the work carried out on board and the time spent alongside the other active work fronts on the vessel.
