Full overhaul of a mooring winch

Complete overhaul of a mooring winch with drum recovery, hydraulic drive overhaul and load testing.

Discipline
Winches and windlasses
Sector
Marine
Location
Port terminal — Santos (SP)
Year
2023
Duration
18 days

Objective

The problem that prompted the intervention

The winch was locking up intermittently on the drive and the drum was severely worn, compromising mooring operations and putting the deck crew at risk.

Contracted scope

  • Complete strip-down of the assembly
  • Recovery of the drum and main shaft
  • Overhaul of the gearbox and brake system
  • Overhaul of the hydraulic motor and control block
  • Surface treatment and industrial painting
  • Reassembly, functional testing and load testing

Execution

The sequence applied and the engineering decisions taken

The order below reproduces how the work was actually carried out, including the points where the condition found required a change of scope.

  1. Inspection on site and agreement of the strip-down scope with the ship's crew.
  2. Strip-down of the assembly and transport of the components to the workshop.
  3. Recovery of the drum by weld build-up and re-machining of the wire seating surfaces.
  4. Recovery of the main shaft and full replacement of the bearings.
  5. Gearbox overhaul with bearings, seals and oil replaced.
  6. Overhaul of the hydraulic motor and inspection of the control block, which identified the valve responsible for the intermittent locking.
  7. Blasting, painting to a scheme suited to a salt environment, and reassembly.
  8. Functional test in the workshop, reinstallation on board and a recorded load test.

Comparison

Condition before and after the intervention

Drag the slider to switch between the two recorded conditions.

Condition of the equipment after the intervention
Condition of the equipment before the intervention
Before After
Before
Intermittent locking on the drive and a drum severely worn on the seating surfaces.
After
Stable operation, drum recovered and the assembly passed its load test.

Result

What the intervention delivered

The equipment was handed back with stable operation across the full working range and passed its load test. Overhauling the control block eliminated the intermittent locking, which earlier work had treated only as a hydraulic motor fault.

18 days of overhaul
0 failures in the load test
100% of components inspected
