Retrofit of a steering system with an obsolete drive

Modernisation of the hydraulic steering drive, keeping the vessel's original structural interfaces.

Discipline

Sector
Marine
Location
Shipyard — Santa Catarina (SC)
Year

Duration
25 days

Objective

The problem that prompted the intervention

The steering system used components no longer in production, with no replacements available and import lead times incompatible with the operation. The client needed a solution that required no structural alteration to the engine room.

Contracted scope

  • Survey of the mechanical and hydraulic interfaces
  • Design of the new drive
  • Manufacture of adaptors and supports
  • Replacement of the power unit and control block
  • Installation and hydraulic interconnection
  • Commissioning and steering trials

Execution

The sequence applied and the engineering decisions taken

The order below reproduces how the work was actually carried out, including the points where the condition found required a change of scope.

  1. Full survey of the existing interfaces: fixings, strokes, loads and hydraulic connection points.
  2. Design of the new drive around current-production components with replacements available in Brazil.
  3. Manufacture of bases, supports and mechanical adaptors to reuse the original structural fixings.
  4. Replacement of the power unit and the control block.
  5. Installation, hydraulic interconnection and flushing of the lines.
  6. Commissioning with response time and rudder angle verified to port and starboard.

Condition of the equipment after the intervention
Condition of the equipment before the intervention
Before After
Before
Drive built on components out of production, with spares dependent on imports.
After
Modernised drive on locally available components, using the original structural interfaces.

Result

What the intervention delivered

The vessel now runs on components with replacements available in Brazil, removing the dependence on imports. No structural alteration to the engine room was needed, and the response times met the design requirement.
