Structural reinforcement of a rotating equipment base

Diagnosis of excessive vibration and reinforcement of the base, with alignment and levelling corrected.

Discipline

Objective

The problem that prompted the intervention

The set was vibrating above the acceptable limit, with repeated bearing and coupling failures. Earlier work had only replaced the damaged components, without investigating where the vibration came from.

Contracted scope

  • Vibration assessment and evaluation of the base condition
  • Design of the structural reinforcement
  • Manufacture and installation of the reinforcement
  • Regrouting and levelling
  • Realignment of the set
  • Vibration check after start-up

Execution

The sequence applied and the engineering decisions taken

The order below reproduces how the work was actually carried out, including the points where the condition found required a change of scope.

  1. Vibration measurement and assessment of the base, which had lost stiffness and had degraded grouting.
  2. Site survey and design of a reinforcement compatible with the space available and with maintenance access.
  3. Reinforcement elements manufactured in the workshop, cutting the time worked in the operating area.
  4. Strip-down of the set, fitting and welding of the reinforcement with distortion control.
  5. Degraded grout removed, base regrouted and levelled.
  6. Reassembly, alignment of the set and controlled torqueing of the holding-down bolts.
  7. Supervised start-up with vibration re-measured and compared against the initial condition.

Condition before and after the intervention

Condition of the equipment after the intervention
Condition of the equipment before the intervention
Before After
Before
Vibration above the limit, degraded grouting on the base and repeated bearing failures.
After
Base reinforced and levelled, set aligned and vibration within the acceptable band.

Result

What the intervention delivered

Vibration returned to the acceptable band for this type of equipment and the pattern of repeated bearing and coupling failures stopped. The root cause was in the base, not in the components that had been replaced.
